Both methods can be useful, but the right choice depends on belt construction, site constraints and the approved splice procedure.
Conveyor belt splicing combines belt engineering, field preparation, controlled heating and pressure, and site safety. The following framework helps maintenance and procurement teams ask the right questions. It does not replace the belt manufacturer procedure, local regulations or a job-specific risk assessment.
1. Hot splicing uses controlled heat and pressure to cure splice materials.
Treat this as a specification input, not a last-minute check. Record the value from the belt identification, approved splice procedure or site survey and attach the supporting document to the job pack. When the information is uncertain, resolve it with the belt manufacturer, maintenance engineer or equipment supplier before the shutdown begins.
2. Cold bonding avoids a press but depends heavily on surface preparation, adhesive and curing conditions.
The practical goal is to remove variation between crews and shifts. Define who will check this point, which instrument or drawing will be used, and what result is acceptable. A short written hold point is more reliable than relying on memory once the belt is cut and the shutdown clock is running.
3. Steel-cord and high-tension applications commonly require engineered hot-splice procedures.
This detail should also appear in the request for quotation. It allows suppliers to compare the required working area, electrical load, component handling and control method against the proposed equipment. Ask for any assumption to be written on the quotation so it can be reviewed before manufacture.
4. Follow the belt manufacturer procedure and site safety controls rather than a generic time-temperature recipe.
Keep the result in the splice or repair record. If a joint later needs inspection, the team can compare observed damage with the original preparation, heat, pressure, cooling and operating conditions. That evidence is far more useful than changing several process variables at the same time.
Before You Start
Collect the belt data sheet, splice drawing, material instructions and site utility information. Inspect and function-test the complete press package. Assign qualified people to isolation, splice preparation, press operation and final inspection. Record the critical process values so future maintenance decisions are based on evidence.
